Aesthetics of the Pandemic: Afternoon Session (EDT)

MAKING MEANING OF OUR COLLECTIVE FASHION DESIRES

What can spandex bike shorts teach us about our dream future? A lot more than you might think. Become reacquainted with your deepest desires through an exploration of beauty.

Worn-in sweats. Perfectly molded Birkenstocks. The feeling of going braless.

When you think back on your life during the pandemic, like us, you were likely outfitted in something comfy. But what about what you hoped to wear? Even in the most dire moments of new waves, variants, and lockdowns, aspirational aesthetic trends appeared from our collective unconscious. These fashion artifacts are archived in our feeds, boards, saves, and likes. Looking back, we might wonder:

  • Why were oversized white nightgown dresses the dominant aesthetic in our first summer of the pandemic?

  • Why did black spandex bike shorts spill over from the spin studio to the first date?

  • Why was gingham suddenly rendered in muted browns and goldenrod tones, instead of the typical red and blue prints?

This 1.5 hour workshop will explore these questions, connecting you to a new way of understanding the deeper meaning behind your material desires.

Our point of reference is fashion. In its highest form, it’s wearable art—a true manifestation of desire. We can see aesthetic trends as invitations to engage more deeply with the kind of world we want to live in. The very things we find beautiful give us insight into our collective hopes and dreams. By exploring their deeper meanings, we can consciously choose gorgeous ways of meeting our yearnings beyond consumption (e.g., buying the item). And that’s the medicine we need right now.

You might be asking: Why the pandemic? I’m kind of over it. Well, the past three years have been defined by our unmet desires—what we couldn’t or shouldn’t do. We fantasized about how we’d live differently “on the other side” of the pandemic, once things were back to “normal". This is a chance to revisit your longings from a new vantage point, with the wisdom and clarity that comes with time.

We know your brains and bodies are full. This is not a session that’s meant to stuff you up with more information. Our hope is to create a gorgeous, spacious experience that helps you alchemize the mess, chaos, and emotional toll of the past few years. And, most of all, we hope to leave you more connected to a beautiful, better-feeling future. One that you can begin to embody today.
